What Is the Most Expensive House in California?

The title for the Most Expensive House in California belongs to Casa Encantada in the Bel-Air neighborhood of Los Angeles. This is one of the best places to live in California for the rich and famous.

Casa Encantada translated to English means "enchanted" or "charmed" house. Upon viewing the downright palatial estate, enchanted seems to capture its essence perfectly.

From its breathtaking architecture to its luxurious amenities, Casa Encantada truly embodies the magic of a fairytale home. This isn't just the most expensive house in California, it may also be the most expensive in all of the U.S. as well.

Casa Encantada encompasses an expansive 40,000 square feet of property. It sits above the country club overlooking the golf course.

While the asking price is $250 million, this price was recently lowered to $195 million. Even with $55 million knocked off the price tag, it still maintains its status as one of the most expensive luxury homes.

History of Casa Encantada

Casa Encantada has a rich history dating back to the 1930s. The estate was originally built for Hilda Boldt Weber, the widow of prominent industrialist Arthur Letts Jr.

It was designed by architect James Dolena and has a Georgian style. This brand of architecture is known for its grand proportions and classical details.

Then, in 1950, the property was purchased by Conrad Hilton. If the name Hilton sounds familiar it's because this was none other than the founder of the Hilton Hotels chain. Conrad bought the property as a gift for his son Barron, the grandfather of heiress and socialite Paris Hilton.

What Amenities Does Casa Encantada Offer?

You're probably wondering what comes with the high price tag for this expensive real estate. Well, for starters, it features 60 rooms each lavishly appointed by designer T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings.

On the grounds, you'll find a tiled 80ft long pool with a pool house and a formal bar. In addition, there are koi ponds, greenhouses, vegetable and herb gardens, a tropical botanical garden, and rose gardens. It also features a tennis court and a basketball court.

If all that isn't enough this home also has 7 luxurious bedrooms and 20 bathrooms. So it's the perfect place for hosting guests and entertaining with no long lines for the bathroom. You can take your pick.

Runner-Up for the Most Expensive House in California

While Casa Encantada is an impressive. California real estate property, there is another one worth mentioning. A Malibu beach mansion was purchased by Beyoncé and Jay-Z last year. The asking price was $200 million but they acquired it for $190 million in an all-cash deal in May of 2023 from renowned art collectors Bill Bell and Maria Bell.

This puts it neck and neck with Casa Encantada for expensive real estate. Should Casa Encantada sell for its current asking price it will maintain its most expensive house in California title by just $5 million.

The Malibu Beach mansion was designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando and took 15 years to complete. Ando is a sought-after artist but has only designed around 20 homes in the U.S., making him an in-demand artist for high-profile celebrities. He also designed a Malibu mansion for Kanye West which has since fallen into disrepair.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z's mansion sits on around 40,000 square feet on an 8-acre bluff, known aptly as Billionaire's Row. It offers picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean. It also has a private beach which is ideal for someone with as much star power as Beyoncé to enjoy some well-earned privacy with her husband Jay-Z, daughters Blue Ivy and Rumi, and her son Sir.

Not much else is known about the property due to privacy and safety concerns but it is reported as having an infinity reflecting pool and Zen-style water features.

Honorable Mention

Another luxury home of note is simply referred to as "The One." Also located in Bel Air, this 105,000-square-foot megamansion was once valued at $295 million. However, in 2022 it sold for just $126 million at auction or $144 million with fees and commission at Sotheby's Concierge Auctions.

This is a far cry from the $500 million the developer originally intended to get for the home. So, while it could be the most expensive house in California in theory, it didn't quite meet the mark. The owner is the founder and CEO Richard Saghian of the fast fashion company Fashion Nova.

The reason for the huge price cut was due to construction delays and large debts that came from building such a massive property. At one point, the home was placed into a court-ordered receivership. Then, it went into bankruptcy where Saghian obtained it for a steal of a price.

Some points of interest worth mentioning are the sculpture from Italian glassmaker Simone Cenedese in the mansion's yard as well as a rotating sculpture in the foyer. Inside "The One" you'll also find 42 bathrooms, 7 half-bathrooms, and 21 bedrooms with a 4,000 square-foot master bedroom and walk-in closet.

In the dining room, you'll find a 10,000-bottle-capacity wine cellar. There's even a full-service beauty salon and spa. Top it all off with 5 pools, an exercise room, and a juice bar.

Of course what mansion would be complete without a billiards room, cigar lounge, bar, private bowling alley, nightclub, a candy bar, and movie theater? The One definitely lives up to its name as a luxury dream home.
